On April 13, 2026, at around 3:00 a.m., officers were notified by a hospital in Mint Hill, North Carolina, after a pregnant woman arrived with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was transported to the hospital by her husband.
The woman was identified as Sabrina Campos. She was seven months pregnant. Her unborn child did not survive.
Investigators determined Campos had been at her residence with her husband, 41-year-old Luis Marcano-Marcano, following a gathering earlier that evening. Authorities said the two were on the back porch when an argument began.
According to an affidavit, Marcano-Marcano retrieved a firearm during the argument and began firing rounds at the ground near Campos’ feet. He later placed the weapon on a nearby surface.
Authorities said Campos attempted to pick up the firearm, at which point it discharged, striking her in the stomach.
Campos later told investigators she grabbed the weapon because Marcano-Marcano had been drinking and she wanted to prevent him from continuing to fire the gun.
After the shooting, Marcano-Marcano transported Campos to the hospital before returning to the residence and disposing of the firearm in a wooded area.
Marcano-Marcano was taken into custody and charged with discharging a firearm within city limits. He was issued a $1 million bond and placed under an ICE detainer due to pending warrants in Venezuela.
A judge described Marcano-Marcano as a danger to the public, citing the introduction of a firearm into the situation and the disposal of evidence following the incident.
As of April 15, 2026, no murder or manslaughter charges had been filed in connection with the death of the unborn child.
